October 2014: Starbucks nutrition facts can be downloaded below.

Starbucks, named as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for eight years in a row, is the standard by which all coffee houses and coffee roasters are measured. They are known, of course, for their coffee, and for their ever expanding world-wide presence (20,519 stores and counting) but they can and should be just as famous for their nutritious and tasty food. With a large selection of breakfast, lunch and snack items, many of which are low in calories but high on taste, the food at Starbucks is really worth the trip. The company offers drinks as simple as a freshly brewed cup of coffee, or as complicated as a Double Chocolaty Chip Crème Frappuccino Blended Crème Coffee. While happily dispensing advice on the best ways to use Starbuck’s products and inventory, don’t expect to find any official Frappuccino or Macchiato recipes. The coffee giant will share its nutrition facts, but not its trade secrets.

If you are looking for a great breakfast, Starbucks has some of the best choices around. The Bacon & Gouda, Cheddar and Ham or Vegetable & Fontiago breakfast sandwiches are not only low-cal but also delicious. Top those off with a double-tall latte, and you are good to go. For a quick lunch, the Turkey Rustico Panini or the Chicken & Greens Caesar Salad (and another latte) will do the trick. An afternoon snack of an artisan La Boulange pastry (Almond Croissant, Pumpkin Bread, or Washington Pound Cake) and a Frappuccino will give you the strength to get through the rest of your busy day. (Surprisingly, even though many of the pastries look and taste fantastic, many of them are low-fat and low cal).

The one area where Starbucks might need some improvement is in its blended drinks. Although they are wonderful creative and tasty, they are also high in calories and fat. A Caramel Ribbon Crunch Frappuccino has 480 calories and 18 grams of fat. The Java Chip Frappuccino: 460 calories and 17 grams of fat. While the Cinnamon Dolce Light Frappuccino has only 140 calories, its full charge counterpart, the Cinnamon Dolce Frappuccino has 380 calories and 14 grams of fat. Two or three of those a day and you are well over the daily recommended caloric intake. And, unless you are from Seattle, where the normal caffeine levels are so high they cannot be measured, you won’t be able to fall asleep. Ever.
