October 2014: Burger King nutrition facts can be downloaded below.
Burger King has been around for a long time. Founded in 1954, the chain celebrates its 60th anniversary this year. While many of the restaurant’s menu items are high on calories and short on nutrition, the savvy consumer can find some good choices. Even though those Whopper calories taste soooo good, the flame-broiled burgers are a better dietary option. When looking for quick, quality breakfast nutrition, choose the BK Breakfast Muffin Sandwich (260 calories) over the BK Ultimate Breakfast Platter (1020 calories and a whopping – no pun intended – 79 grams of fat).

Burger King’s menu items include both flame-broiled and regular burgers, chicken sandwiches and strips, salads, breakfast items and deserts. Drink selections include smoothies and their signature Frappe coffee drinks. And, of course, the requisite sides are available in the form of onion rings or fries. Burger King offers special pricing for items in their King Deals Value Menu section and offers weekly and monthly specials and money saving coupons.

It is interesting that, at Burger King, two types of entrees that are essentially prepared with the same ingredients and have such different caloric values. The Double Whopper Sandwich with Cheese ( two hamburger patties, two buns, cheese and toppings) weighs in at over 1070 calories, whereas the Flame Broiled Double Cheeseburger (same ingredients) has only 360 calories. The Whopper Sandwich (one patty, buns, toppings) has 650 calories and 37 grams of fat. But the regular hamburger, the Flame Broiled counterpart, has only 230 calories and 9 grams of fat. The take away here (again – no pun intended) should be to choose the Flame Broiled option to soothe your burger cravings.

Though a salad may seem like a good, lo-cal option for lunch, a Chicken Caesar Garden Fresh salad has 650 calories. It is not really a very healthy choice. But Burger King does offer several sandwich wraps that are high in nutritional value while keeping the calories and fat low – low enough that you could treat yourself to a 12oz Strawberry Banana Smoothie (190 calories) and …ok – a small serving of fries.
