Founded in Normal, Illinois in 1934 by Gus Belt, the original Steak ‘N Shake was actually originally a combination chicken restaurant and gas station. However, after spending four years serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Belt decided to redefine his business and turn it into a hamburger stand. Instead of serving just any hamburgers, though, Belt served high-quality “steakburgers”, and his little burger stand quickly became a huge success.

In the early days, to prove that his burgers were made from the best meat and that they were higher quality than any other burger stand or restaurant, Gus would wheel in a whole barrel of prime cuts of steak, including t-bones, sirloins, and rounds, for his customers to see. These would become their burgers, and they could rest assured that he would always use the best ingredients to make them the very finest burgers.

Determined to serve the best burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes in the business, Gus continued to focus on quality while keeping his Steak ‘N Shake menu prices low. Today you can walk into any number of Steak ‘N Shake locations across the United States – though there are more Steak ‘N Shake locations in the southeast and Midwest than anywhere else in the country – and find that same dedication to quality.

Today, over 80 years since Gus opened his doors for the first time, Steak & Shake’s menu continues to include only the very best, freshest, and tastiest burgers and shakes in the whole country.
