When the first White Castle location opened in 1921, Upton Sinclair’s book The Jungle had put a bad taste for ground beef in Americans’ mouths. Believing all ground meat to be prepared in unsanitary conditions, as depicted in the book, people were avoiding hamburgers, meatloaf, and anything to do with ground beef products. However, White Castle founder and cook Walt A. Anderson and his business partner Edgar Waldo “Billy” Ingram were on a mission to change all that with their restaurants.

That’s why all White Castle locations were very small, prefabricated buildings with white porcelain enamel and steel exteriors. Their interiors were polished white, as well, and all of their employees were dressed in immaculately white uniforms. Along with these beautiful, clean buildings, White Castle prices were also incredibly low, too. While you could order a single burger for five cents, you could also find advertisements for promotions that let you buy five burgers for just ten cents if you were making an order for takeout.

Today, there are more than 420 White Castle locations throughout the Midwest and along the east coast of the United States, and just last year Time Magazine named the White Castle slider burger the most influential burger of all time. Though White Castle prices have increased from their original five-cent price, they are still very competitively priced, especially when you choose one of the many combos available on the White Castle menu.

You can order White Castle burgers as a combination of four sliders, a box of fries and a drink, or you can get two double-stack sliders with fries and a drink, too. Kids can get a single slider and a juice or milk for a healthier, kid-sized meal, too. Then there are the chicken rings meals, chicken sliders, and sliders with cheese to choose from, as well. And, if you’re really hungry or you’re serving multiple people, you can order one of the Big Crave combos. For example, the Castle Pack 8 comes with eight sliders and a big box of fries or onion rings. You can also “Buy ‘em by the sack” or get a Crave Case® or Crave Crate® for even more sliders.
